Statement from the Otero County Treasurer regarding Legislative changes:

Legislative changes enacted by the Colorado Legislature passing SB23B-001 to accommodate property tax relief will delay certification of the County tax roll. The new deadline for the later tax roll certification is January 24, 2024.

The reason for the delay in the deadline calendar by the legislature is to allow taxing authorities sufficient time to certify their mill levies and to allow county assessors more time to process the necessary changes and to meet the state's reporting requirement.

Please be aware that these changes DO NOT alter any payment deadlines. If paying in halves, the first half payment due date for property taxes is February 29, 2024, due to Leap Year. The second half payment due date is June 15, 2024. If making a full payment, the deadline is April 30, 2024. The Colorado legislature chose not to extend the payment deadline to ensure that special districts such as fire departments, school districts, and other public entities receive the revenue to continue their services.

Once the tax roll process is complete, property owners will receive their statements by mail, which could take approximately two weeks.

PROPERTY TAX INFORMATION:

Property tax notices will be mailed by the latter part of January. If you own property in Otero County and you do not receive a property tax notice the second week in February, please call our office as soon as possible at (719) 383-3030. Failure to receive a notice does not invalidate the property owner's responsibility to pay taxes on time.

IMPORTANT DUE DATES:

1st Half Payment - February 28 current year

2nd Half Payment - June 15 current year

Full Payment - April 30 current year

If the due date falls on a Friday, Saturday, Sunday, legal holiday, or any day our office is closed, your payment shall be deemed timely received if received and/or postmarked on the next regular business day. Postmarks are accepted for current-year taxes only. Delinquent taxes must be paid in our office by the last working day of the month for valid interest amounts.

As always, if you have any questions, please call the Treasurer's Office at (719) 383-3030.
